The History of Thai Massage (Nuad Thai)

The History of Thai Massage (Nuad Thai)
Thai traditional massage, known in its homeland as Nuad Thai or Nuad Boran (“ancient massage”), has roots stretching back more than 2,500 years. It is a therapeutic practice that blends Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences, integrating elements of Ayurveda, yoga, and energetic medicine.
Legendary Origins
Tradition attributes the foundation of Thai massage to Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, the personal physician of the Buddha and a revered figure in Thai healing culture. Although historical sources are partly legendary, his name remains a symbol of the transmission of medical knowledge from India to Thailand.
Cultural and Spiritual Influences
Nuad Thai developed within Buddhist monasteries, where monks practiced massage as an expression of metta—loving-kindness and compassionate service. The temple of Wat Pho in Bangkok remains one of the most important centers for the teaching and preservation of this discipline. Ancient inscriptions and diagrams illustrating the body’s energy lines can still be found there.
The Energy Lines (Sen)
At the core of Thai massage philosophy is the concept of Sen lines, energetic pathways through which vital energy flows. Through rhythmic pressure, assisted stretching, and joint mobilization—often described as “passive yoga”—the practitioner works to restore energetic balance and promote overall well-being.
Modern Development
Over the centuries, Thai massage evolved into two main styles:
• Northern Style (Chiang Mai) – slower, more meditative, with a stronger focus on stretching.
• Southern Style (Bangkok) – more dynamic, with greater emphasis on acupressure.
In 2019, Nuad Thai was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its historical and cultural significance.
Today
Today, Thai massage is practiced worldwide, both in its traditional floor-based form on a mat and in adaptations performed on massage tables. It remains a discipline that unites technique, spirituality, and therapeutic relationship, aiming to harmonize body, mind, and energy.
