POLITICA INTERNAZIONALE

The world is still wondering: What is the price of Trump’s mediation, which Egypt did not request, to save it from the Ethiopian Dam (GERD)?!

Ricardo Fabiano: America doesn't give free gifts, and Ethiopia is threatening Egypt and Sudan with the weapon of artificial flooding

Speculation continues in international media and political circles in search of a definitive answer to the big question about Trump’s sudden mediation for Egypt, which it did not request in the first place, regarding the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam issue.

In contrast, the Horn of Africa region surrounding the Renaissance Dam is witnessing an intensive military presence of Israeli military bases, with the support of some regional regimes.

This influence, which threatens Egyptian, Sudanese, and Somali national interests, crystallized with the announcement by the UAE and Israel of their recognition of what is called the state of Somaliland – which is not recognized by the United Nations – and is only recognized by the UAE and Israel in the world!

International observers were divided between a lack of clarity in their vision and the linking of mediation to a price paid in the Palestinian Gaza file, which has become under the control of a Jewish-American colonial council led by Trump with the participation of two war criminals against Arabs;

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel; Tony Blair, the former Iraqi war criminal; and Rabbi Aryeh Lightstone.

With the participation of a Palestinian government not chosen by the Palestinians, but whose members were selected by Trump, the sole and exclusive owner of the so-called peace council!

Political expert Ayman Zein El-Din believes that Trump, the American cowboy, does not take any step without something in return, and therefore there is a relationship between the sudden American mediation and other regional issues, such as the Gaza issue.

This is the same warning given by water expert Dr. Abbas Sharaki, Professor of Geology and Water at Cairo University, who predicted that the American initiative meant there was a price to be paid in return, and compromises for the success of the mysterious mediation.

Sharaki asserted that the quid pro quo might be linked to deals concerning the Red Sea, especially since a copy of the American initiative had been delivered to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Atef Abdel Gawad, a lecturer at George Washington University, described the initiative as a “political offer” to Cairo in exchange for its support of American policies in the region.

For his part, Italian political expert Riccardo Fabiano, director of the North Africa program at the International Crisis Group, believes that he does not expect anything good from such mediation, stressing that the Americans do not give free gifts to others, but there is always a price to pay.

He called for waiting longer to see the extent to which Trump would keep his word to the Egyptians, and what the repercussions would be for other players, especially in the Horn of Africa, a region rife with conflict over influence and water resources.

.

It is worth noting that Ethiopia issued a strongly worded, practical warning to Egypt;

for causing what the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation described as an “artificial flood,” referring to a sudden and significant increase in water releases from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a result of its unilateral and reckless management.

.

The Ministry of Irrigation announced that Ethiopia manipulated the natural flood schedule by releasing massive and unjustified quantities of water in September 2025, leading to the flooding of lands in the Nile Delta and a sharp rise in the Nile’s water level.

The following are the key points regarding the artificial flood (resulting from the opening of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam gates in 2025) :-

The reason: The unilateral and uncontrolled management of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the release of water without coordination, especially after the dam’s filling, which violates technical and scientific guidelines.

Timing and severity: Shifting the natural flood season (which peaks in August) to later in the year (September), resulting in a more intense and powerful flood.

Impacts:

  1. Inundation of riverbank lands (lands surrounding the river channel in Egypt).

  1. Increased severity of floods in Sudan.

  1. A direct threat to water security and the lives of citizens in downstream countries.

The Egyptian position:

The Ministry of Irrigation confirmed that it is monitoring the situation around the clock, and that the High Dam remains the guarantee for protecting Egypt, stressing that Ethiopia’s irresponsible actions constitute an “artificial flood.”

Background: Reports indicate that Ethiopia deliberately stored large quantities of water and then opened the middle spillway and the emergency spillway before releasing huge quantities that created unjustified increases, leading to the flooding of many lands, to use it as a media shot, a pressure tactic and a threat.
