Egyptian Writers Union Hosts Book Signing for “The White Light” Amidst Distinguished Gathering
Yesterday, the main hall at the Egyptian Writers Union headquarters in the historic Zamalek district hosted the launch and signing ceremony for the short story collection *The White Light* (*Al-Nur al-Abyad*) by Egyptian author Reham Medhat.
The event drew a remarkable audience comprising both the general public and the cultural elite—including a host of journalists, media figures, and intellectuals, alongside many others interested in the cultural scene from Egypt and the Arab world. This diverse attendance fostered a vibrant, interactive atmosphere and enriched the ensuing discussions.
During a brief critical review at the event, several critics praised the artistic structure of the collection, noting its literary style—one characterized by the quality of *al-sahl al-mumtani‘* (deceptive simplicity: writing that appears simple yet is difficult to emulate). They observed that while the stories are rooted in the realist school, they are skillfully infused with touches of creative imagination, lending the texts a distinctive allure that captivates the reader. The collection, titled *The White Light* (Al-Nur al-Abyad), was recently released by Mufrad Publishing and Translation; through it, the author presents a profound narrative vision addressing various social and human issues relevant to contemporary life, effectively diagnosing both the ailments and the remedies concerning the human condition.
The collection is distinguished by its profound ability to delve into the depths of the human psyche. A standout piece is the story “Darkness of the Night” (*Zulmat al-Layl*), which engages readers through a dramatic narrative that resonates with young people; it explores the psychological dimensions of adolescents facing the specter of bullying and isolation, illustrating how accumulated frustration can transform into a driving force for altering one’s destiny.
